Pittsburgh Chinese School Spring Festival Gala Concludes Successfully, Welcoming the Year of the Snake
On January 26, 2025, Pittsburgh Chinese School (PCS)hosted its annual Spring Festival Gala, bringing a warm Lunar New Year celebration to students, parents, and guests.
Around noon, board members and volunteers began arriving at the school, eagerly preparing for the event. At the cafeteria entrance, board members continued ticket sales, while stage decorations progressed smoothly. Vibrant red lanterns were hung high, and colorful balloons, like the bright smiles of children, added to the joyful atmosphere. Above the stage, a beautifully crafted "Happy New Year" banner stood out, perfectly complementing the other festive decorations. Meanwhile, senior class hosts arrived early to rehearse their lines, ensuring a seamless program flow.
By 2:00 PM, the once-empty auditorium had filled nearly to capacity. Excitement buzzed in the air as children and parents eagerly awaited the start of the performances. This year, the school was honored to welcome two special guests, Mr. Aibo, founder of the Carnegie International Student Organization, and Ms. Adam Winner from Sewickley Academy, who joined in celebrating this joyful occasion accompanied with PCS board Chair.
Amid enthusiastic applause, the gala officially opened with the lively children’s dance "Golden Snake Welcomes Spring." The hosts delivered with confidence and grace, leading into a diverse and captivating lineup. The performances ranged from elegant traditional dances to energetic Latin routines, from classical musical renditions of popular songs to poetry recitations rich with cultural heritage. The audience was deeply engaged, with waves of applause and cheers filling the hall, creating a truly festive atmosphere. At 4 pm, the hosts extended their heartfelt New Year wishes, bringing an unforgettable event of entertainment to a perfect conclusion.
Following the performances, the traditional New Year carnival kicked off in the gymnasium. Children excitedly took part in activities such as riddle-solving and jump rope competitions, their laughter filling the air. The school had prepared an array of delightful small prizes and raffle tickets, ensuring that every child went home with a gift and a smile. Meanwhile, volunteers in the cafeteria were working diligently to prepare dinner.
By 4:30 PM, the basketball team volunteers had already picked up steaming hot meals from three well-loved Chinese restaurants, namely Chengdu Gourmet, Szechuan Spice, and PF BBQ House. After careful verification, the meals were promptly and neatly arranged. Serving volunteers quickly finished their own meals and prepared for the first wave of dinners arriving at 5:00 PM.
Throughout the dinner service, board members oversaw various responsibilities, including ticket verification, raffle ticket distribution, and on-site coordination, ensuring a smooth and organized dining experience. High school volunteers worked tirelessly in the serving area, accommodating as many meal preferences as possible. About one and half hour later, as the board president announced that the principal would be distributing red envelopes to the children, excitement peaked. Children quickly lined up, their laughter echoing through the hall, marking one of the evening’s highlights. The highly anticipated raffle draw followed, bringing the celebration to another exhilarating peak. This year, the prize categories remained as exciting as ever, featuring third, second, and first-place prizes, with an array of generous gifts. Some lucky attendees won multiple times, while others playfully teased that they were “saving their luck” for the grand prize. The room was filled with cheers and laughter, ushering in the new year with joy and good fortune. Good times always go too quickly. By 7:30 PM, as the event concluded successfully, families and friends exchanged warm New Year greetings before heading home. However, board members and volunteers remained behind, working diligently to clean up the cafeteria and auditorium. Only after ensuring everything was properly tidied did, they finally leave, feeling a deep sense of accomplishment.
The success of this year's Spring Festival Gala would not have been possible without the joint efforts of the school administrations and the board members. Based on the experience of the Spring Festival Gala, adjustments were made in various areas, such as dining services, dinner ticketing, and the interactivity and pacing of the activities. Of course, the success of the event also relies heavily on the enthusiastic support and participation of the volunteers, who made the entire evening even more exciting and unforgettable. As we welcome the Year of the Snake, we extend our heartfelt wishes to all students, teachers, and parents of PCS. May the new year bring you happiness, prosperity, and success! We eagerly look forward to gathering again at next year’s Spring Festival Gala to share more joyful moments!
