On September 21, 2024, Pittsburgh Chinese School (PCS) was invited by the Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Center (PCCC) to participate in the annual Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Festival (PCCCF) held at Mellon Park. To ensure effective promotion and participation, the principal and the vice principal, along with other school leaders, held detailed discussions and plans, including planning the event format and allocating volunteer tasks.
Around 9 a.m. on the day of the event, the principal, the vice principal, the Board chair, and some volunteer teachers began setting up the booth. As more volunteers arrived, the booth was filled with carefully prepared school introduction materials, small items for sale, and special game materials. With the singing of the U.S. national anthem, the cultural festival officially began. The PCS booth, located to the right of the performance stage, attracted many visitors with its prominent banner and a variety of activities related to traditional Chinese culture. These activities included face painting, mooncake making, Chinese cultural souvenirs, calligraphy, and fan painting. Despite a brief interruption due to a thunderstorm at noon, the volunteers at the booth remained busy almost non-stop until the event ended at 5:30 p.m. Many attendees showed great interest in PCS’s teaching and curriculum, with nearly 60 brochures distributed and about $140 raised from the sale of items, which will be used for the school’s daily expenses.
The event was a great success, thanks to the hard work of the volunteer teachers and students, who helped showcase the past and future of PCS. As the only Chinese teaching institution invited to this event in Pittsburgh, we cherish this opportunity to share PCS’s nearly 45-year history and educational philosophy with different communities in Pittsburgh and hope for more people to participate in the development of PCS.
