On May 11, 2025, the second annual Taste of Asia Festival was grandly held at the renowned Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. As a key event in the celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month), the festival featured Asian cuisine, cultural exhibitions, and stage performances, bringing together numerous culinary and cultural organizations from Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. Pittsburgh Chinese School (PCS) was honored to be invited to participate in this year’s event, showcasing the richness of Chinese culture through systematic language education displays, competitive booth activities, and a variety of captivating performances—winning enthusiastic praise and attention from attendees.
- A Vibrant Cultural Booth: Blending Education and Engagement
By around 10:30 a.m., the school’s principal, vice board chair, and board member volunteers had completed setting up the booth. The design thoughtfully blended educational value and engaging interaction, presenting a wealth of content in diverse formats. On one side of the booth, students demonstrated the challenging stack cup sport, showcasing their impressive concentration, hand-eye coordination, and teamwork. The demonstration attracted many onlookers, particularly one young visitor who repeatedly returned to watch and learn with great interest.
On the other side, the school offered a comprehensive introduction to its teaching materials and curriculum—especially the "Yangyang Chinese" program, which is designed for students learning Chinese as a second language. This reflected the school’s adaptability and professionalism in multicultural education. Additionally, the booth featured various traditional Chinese cultural items, such as face-changing figurines, small jade pendants, and Chinese chess sets, allowing visitors to experience the richness and charm of Chinese heritage firsthand. The school also prepared printed brochures on-site to help interested parents learn more about class offerings and registration, further promoting Chinese education in the community.
- Melodic Pipa, Graceful Dance: A Stage Full of Applause
During the stage performances, teachers and students from the PCS presented two pipa pieces and a solo ethnic dance, fully demonstrating their artistic talents and deep appreciation for traditional Chinese culture. The pipa ensemble performed "Waiting for a Thousand Years" and "Dance of the Golden Snake", whose melodies ranged from gently lyrical to bold and energetic. The audience responded with thunderous applause and was captivated by the unique tones of the instrument—many even approached afterward to inquire about learning the pipa and its cultural roots.
The solo dance performance, "Spring’s Adoration", featured graceful, fluid movements expressing love for spring and a celebration of life. The dancer’s elegant rhythm and flowing presence infused the stage with poetry and emotion, earning another round of enthusiastic applause.
Through both booth exhibitions and stage performances, PCS offered a vivid and multifaceted display of Chinese language and traditional arts. In a community rich in cultural diversity, the school helped build bridges for cross-cultural understanding and communication. School principal expressed the commitment to continuing the promotion of Chinese culture abroad, actively participating in community events, and contributing to the global appreciation of Chinese traditions and the celebration of cultural diversity.
