Chinese Traditional Musical Instruments

Begin Your Journey into Chinese Traditional Music through your fingertips and breath!

This class introduces students to Chinese traditional musical instruments, with Pipa and Hulusi as the main instruments for the fall semester. Students interested in other Chinese traditional instruments may also inquire.

Class Highlights

  • Pipa tradition: Pipa is a core instrument of this class and an important part of our school’s traditional music program. In recent years, our Pipa students have participated in many community cultural performances and have gradually built a strong reputation in the Pittsburgh community.
  • Beginner-friendly: Hulusi is relatively accessible for beginners, helping students start practicing and enjoy playing music early in the semester.
  • Family participation welcome: Students age 6 and above, as well as adults, are welcome to register. Parents and children are welcome to learn together.
  • Flexible repertoire: Students are encouraged to suggest their favorite pieces for practice and performance.                   1. Pipa

Pipa is one of the most representative traditional Chinese plucked instruments. It has a rich sound, strong expressive power, and excellent performance potential. With step-by-step instruction, students can usually begin playing simple pieces after one semester and gradually build experience for stage performance and ensemble playing.

Pipa instruction is suitable for returning students with prior experience, and interested new students are also welcome. Students participating in Pipa instruction will need to obtain their own Pipa. Most beginner Pipas cost around $200–$300. Students will also need their own set of plastic nails and tape. The teacher will provide other class materials, such as music sheets and practice materials.

If you are interested in learning Pipa, please consult the teacher before purchasing an instrument.

2. Hulusi

Hulusi, also known as the Chinese gourd flute, is a traditional Chinese wind instrument with a warm and beautiful sound. It is relatively beginner-friendly and is a good starting point for students with little or no prior musical experience. Students can begin with an accessible instrument and gradually experience the charm of Chinese traditional music.

Most beginner Hulusi instruments are expected to cost no more than $30. Families may purchase them through Amazon, or the school may consider group purchasing from China depending on enrollment.

Important Note: To avoid purchasing an instrument that does not meet class requirements, please consult the teacher before making any purchase.

3. Other Instruments

Students who are interested in other Chinese traditional instruments, such as Dizi, Bawu, Ocarina, Xiao, or Erhu, are welcome to indicate their interest during registration or contact the teacher for more information. The school will determine whether to include additional instruments or offer future instruction based on enrollment, students’ ages, experience levels, and instrument availability.

The registration form may include the following optional question to help the school understand student interests:
“Other Chinese traditional instruments you are interested in, if any: ________”

4. Class Format

Class meets on Sundays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., during the third period of Chinese school. If there is a scheduling conflict with a Chinese language class, please confirm with the school office.

Class activities will be adjusted according to students’ ages, experience levels, and instrument choices. The class will include basic fingering, rhythm training, guided practice, and simple ensemble work. Instruction will begin with fundamental playing techniques, with the goal of helping students start practicing independently and participating in ensemble activities as early as possible. More advanced techniques and musical expression will be introduced gradually as students progress. A key goal of the class is to help students build the skills needed to participate in performances at the Chinese New Year celebration and other community cultural events.

The teacher will select appropriate pieces based on students’ progress, including traditional Chinese tunes, modern Chinese songs, and other melodies suitable for classroom practice and stage performance.

5. Enrollment (Family Participation Welcome)

Students age 6 and above who are interested in Chinese traditional music are welcome to register. Adults are also welcome to participate, and no prior musical experience is required. Family participation is encouraged; parents and children are welcome to learn together. Whether students hope to develop musical interest, explore Chinese culture, or participate in future community cultural events, this class offers a supportive starting point.

6. Course Goals

  • Develop students’ interest in Chinese traditional music
  • Teach basic playing techniques and rhythm skills
  • Introduce Chinese traditional culture and musical instruments
  • Build teamwork and ensemble awareness
  • Build a foundation for future performances and ensemble playing

We hope this class will allow students to experience Chinese traditional music while learning the Chinese language, appreciate the beauty of Chinese musical instruments, and gradually build musical interest and cultural connection in a fun and supportive environment.
